Our Wedding

JUNE 25, 2016

We know we’ve picked a remote, albeit breathtaking, mountain location for our special day; the fact that you’re even considering joining us makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. We want you to treat this wedding like a vacation, so we will give you tons of options for your travels to make the most of your time in the wild, wild, west.

Location

Telluride is a magical place located in southwestern Colorado. The town is a former silver mining camp on the San Miguel River, and is nestled in the western San Juan Mountains. We fell in love with Telluride this past spring while attending the world famous bluegrass festival and hope you will too.

Our Venue

The Schmid Family Ranch (pictured below) is a Centennial farm on Wilson Mesa, about ten miles west of Telluride proper.  The ranch has been in operation since the family homestead in 1882.

Travel

For now, there are no commercial flights into Telluride Airport (unless, you’re friends with Oprah or Ralph Lauren). Below are a few suggested cities to fly into.

Denver

6 hour drive to/from telluride

No matter where you're coming from the cheapest flight will be on Frontier Airlines into Denver International Airport. From DIA you will take a scenic drive through the Rockies, hopefully with a killer playlist. We recommend a late flight out on Sunday after the wedding (after 5pm). Fox Rent A Car is the cheapest rental car company you will find at the Denver Airport.

_
There is plenty to do in Denver before you come to Telluride. Here's a Best Of 2015 list from Westword.

The places we miss the most:
Denver Beer Co.Racca’s Pizzeria Napoletana (formerly Marco’s Coal-Fired Pizza), Crooked Stave Brewery, ACE Ping-Pong Bar, Curtis Park Delicatessen (damn good sammies) and, of course, there is a dispensary on every corner.

Also, if you want to stay in Colorado after the wedding, it would be worth your while to check out the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. We (Drew) would recommend you go to the Brand New/Modest Mouse show on June 29th. Because, Brand New.

Salt Lake City

6 hour drive to/from telluride

Similar to Denver, SLC is roughly 6 hours away from Telluride by car. While we haven't spent much time there, we can pretty much guarantee a good time if you want to stick around before heading down to Telluride. Utah is pretty neat. We recommend a late flight out on Sunday after the wedding (after 5pm).
Here's a pretty awesome list of things to check out in Salt Lake City. Perks of flying into SLC? You have access to some pretty incredible national parks on the way to Telluride. Arches National Park & Canyonlands National Park are both worth a visit . If you decide on this route, call us for recommendations on activities and sites!

Montrose

1.5 hour away

This is going to be by far the most expensive, but most convenient option. There is a shuttle for around $50 that will take you to Telluride. Your other option is to rent a car.

Durango

2 Hours away

Durango is another “convenient” option. There are shuttles from this town as well, but not as frequent as Montrose. Your other option would be to rent a car.

Grand Junction

2.5 hours away

Grand Junction is 1 hour outside Moab, UT, home to those two lovely National Parks we mentioned above: Arches & Canyonlands. You would need to rent a car at this location as well.

Denver

6 hour drive to/from telluride

Denver is your cheapest flight option of all the options we will name. From Denver you will take a scenic drive through the Rockies, hopefully with a killer playlist. We recommend a late flight out on Sunday after the wedding (after 5pm). Fox Rent A Car is the cheapest rental car company you will find at the Denver Airport.

Accommodations

Please book soon! Telluride Wine Festival is the same weekend, as well as a handful of other weddings and good spots will book up quickly. Below you will find a few options that have special rates, please refer to the Wilson-Roper wedding when talking with a representative.
We will be providing shuttles on the day of the wedding, so we ask that everyone book accomodations in the town of Telluride for easy transportation (NOT in Mountain Village). Our venue is located approximately 30 minutes from the center of town, and because of the rugged terrain we highly discourage anyone from driving to the ceremony themselves.

AIRBNB

Airbnb is our favorite way to book travel accommodations.

We’ve even hand-selected a few properties that would be perfect for our wedding weekend.

BOOTDOCTORS.COM

If you don’t want to venture out on your own, Boot Doctors in Telluride has graciously given our guests 20% off outdoor activities if you call and tell them you’re with the Wilson-Roper wedding. They offer Stand-Up paddle boarding on a high mountain lake, mountain bike tours, fat tire mountain biking, and brewery tours.

Gondola to San Sophia Overlook

FREE!

The first leg travels between Telluride and Mountain Village, beginning on Oak Street in the town of Telluride and ending at Gondola Plaza in the Mountain Village core. The mid-point of the first leg is called the San Sophia Station. You can exit here to head to the hiking trails or Allred’s Restaurant and spectacular views!

Bridal Veil Falls

Hike

This 3.6 mile round trip hike is easy-moderate. Bridal Veil Falls are the tallest free falling falls in Colorado. At 365 feet in height, these falls entice visitors and adventurers from all over the world to hike, bike, four-wheel drive, and explore the surrounding wilderness. A privately owned, historic power plant sits atop the falls.

Go east through the town of Telluride along Colorado Avenue toward the east side of the box canyon. Continue past the Pandora Mill site on your left and follow the road marked County Road. You can either stop and park at the Valley View Area Parking and continue on foot or on a bike or continue up the dirt road, following the switchbacks, to the falls. High clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. No vehicles are permitted beyond the top of the falls, but you may park and continue on foot. The gate just before the power plant is the trailhead heading into the Bridal Veil Basin.

Blue Lake

Hike

The hike to Blue Lake is a spectacular trip with wildflowers galore! The alpine lake is situated above treeline at 12,400 feet. Along the trail you will find abandoned mining cabins and equipment. This place is definitely #instagramworthy. (note: this is a moderate hike clocking in at 5.25 miles to 12,400 ft in altitude).

Begin by driving or hiking up to Bridal Veil Falls on the east end of the town of Telluride. High clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Enter the gate at the top of the falls and continue on a narrow road behind the power plant alongside Bridal Veil Creek. You will arrive at a split in the trail about an hour into the hike; stay left, and continue up the switchbacks towards the basin until you reach Blue Lake.

Alta Lakes

Hike

"Where Heaven Meets Earth" -- Located on the back side of the Telluride Ski Resort and Palmyra Peak, Alta Lakes provides a magical alpine setting in summer. Enjoy fly fishing, hiking or taking an easy day-trip from Telluride to the beautiful lake.

Drive approximately 5 miles south on Highway 145. Turn east on Forest Road #623 (Alta Lakes Road) and continue about 3-3.5 miles to the first lake. The drive is well marked, high clearance is recommended and don't forget to stop in the Ghost Town of Alta and take photos before proceeding to the lake.
